The new Xiaomi devices came with a locked bootloader. This is because of the security issues that came with unlocking bootloader – data theft and such. If you lose your device and if the bootloader is unlocked, thieves can flash it to access all the data in it. The best way to prevent this is to not include the option to unlock bootloader in the first place. But, you can unlock it today. Each Mi account has the permission to unlock the bootloader at their own risk. Here’s how to unlock Xiaomi bootloader.
Unlock Xiaomi Bootloader
You have to check if the bootloader is actually locked at first. The process is simple. All you have to do is boot into Fastboot mode and type in the following command.
fastboot oem device-info
After a few secs, you will see either of the two messages;
- Device unlocked: true
- Device unlocked: false
The first one means that the bootloader is already unlocked and you do not need to read this tutorial any further. If you see the second response, then you need to unlock the bootloader. Follow the steps below to unlock Xiaomi bootloader. Step 1: Head over to Settings > Mi Account. Login to your account if you haven’t already.
Step 2: Now, go to Settings > All specs or About phone. Tap on MIUI version several times to unlock Developer Options. You will see a pop up saying you are a developer.
Step 3: Go to Additional Settings > Developer Options. Tap on Allow OEM unlocking. Select Enable when a warning appears.
Step 4: You will need a PC now. Download and install Mi Unlock.
Step 5: Turn off your device. Hold Power and Volume Down buttons until the Fastboot screen appears.
Step 6: Using a USB cable, plug in your device and PC.
Step 7: Open Mi Unlock and accept the agreement.
Step 8: Use your Mi Account credentials to log in.
Step 9: You will see a message saying Device connected. If you don’t, unplug and plug in the device again. After you see the message, click on Unlock. Step 10: After about a few seconds, if you have followed the all the steps correctly, you will see a message that says “After XXX hours of trying to unlock the device”. This message is not an issue and all you have to do is wait. The timer can be 720 / 360 / 72 hours. Try to unlock it again after the timer has reset. This time you will get the message Unlocked successfully. Reboot phone and you’re done.
