Most of the world is on lockdown right now. People are at home watching YouTube, Netflix, among a lot of bandwidth using activities while they are under quarantine due to COVID-19 pandemic. So, to reduce the stress on the internet, Google has decided to reduce YouTube’s default video quality to just 480p. This doesn’t mean that you can’t play those videos on HD at all. You can still manually change YouTube Default Video Quality to HD. But wouldn’t it be awesome if you can somehow set the default video quality to HD again? Well, you can! Here’s how to set YouTube default video quality to HD.
Set YouTube Default Video Quality to HD
You might have searched or known that there is no option to set the default video quality within the YouTube app. Every time you open a video, you have to manually set the quality to HD. This guide will have a solution for both Android and iPhone, and if it doesn’t work, I’ll also show you how you can set the quality manually for those who do not know.
Set YouTube Default Video Quality to HD on Android
The easiest way to change the default video playback quality on YouTube is to use a 3rd party client called YouTube Vanced. This is a free app that lets you change the default playback quality of YouTube videos anytime you want; bypassing Google’s restrictions. You do not need to root your phone for this to work.
The process to install Vanced and its accompanying app is easy and not that long. We’ve already written a guide to Change YouTube Default Video Quality on Android.
Set YouTube Default Video Quality to HD on iPhone
Unfortunately, this only works if you jailbreak your iPhone; so, this might not be for everybody. For those you meet the primary requirement, you can use Cercube to watch and freely set default playback quality on YouTube. However, if your iPhone is running on official iOS build this will not work. You have to manually set the quality each time you open a video.
Changing the default quality of YouTube videos isn’t the only feature the app has to offer
- Save a video as audio
- Download a video up to 4K resolution
- Set the default streaming quality on 3G/4G and WiFi
- Share the downloads to any installed iOS app
- Export the downloaded files to the Videos and Music app
- Play YouTube in PiP mode
- Enable background playback
- Block all the advertisements
Manually Set YouTube Default Video Quality to HD for Android and iPhone
Work both for Android and iPhone without 3rd party app. If you cannot get the workaround to work or do not want to jailbreak your iPhone, you can manually set the quality of the video each time you open it. To be honest, this is not that difficult to do and probably is the easiest workaround. If you do not know how to manually change the playback quality on YouTube, here’s how.
- Tap on the video player.
- Tap on the 3-dot menu on the top right corner.
- Tap on Quality.
- Choose the desired resolution.
