The refresh rate on your Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL is dynamic. It means that it changes depending on the level of the brightness of the screen. If the brightness set below 75%, the refresh rate will drop from 90Hz to 60Hz. you can always set the screen brightness to the max to set the refresh rate to 90Hz – that’s one way to do it. But there’s an issue with the battery life. And you might not want to always keep your screen brightness maxed out because if your own personal preferences.
But if you want the smooth 90Hz screen experience every time without having to set the screen brightness above 75%, there is a simple workaround. There’s a hidden setting that you need to enable. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Go to Settings.
Step 2: Scroll down to the bottom and then tap on About.
Step 3: Scroll down again and tap on Build Number 7 times in rapid succession.
Step 4: You will get a notification saying you’re in developer mode.

And there you go. Now, no matter how dim your screen is, it will always run on 90Hz. but it is important to note that some media will still force the screen to run at 60Hz. These situations may include turning on battery saver mode, playing video as they are usually shot at 25-30 fps and a high refresh rate would be a waste. It would be easier to just use the phone in default settings as there some of you’ll barely even notice the difference. The UI is still smooth in 60Hz and it’ll consume a lot less power than 90Hz.
