Its summer vacation on one of the hemisphere and people are packing for a trip abroad. Trip to the country with completely different language, culture, tradition and everything else. It’s not possible to completely learn everything about a country just for a month of vacation abroad and it’s difficult to communicate without it. However, we can avoid this using the device you always have with you – your smartphone.

Here are a few apps for your Android device that will help you remove the barrier of miscommunication and misunderstanding when travelling abroad. Here are the must have apps for travelers.

Google Translate:

google translateThis name is not uncommon and is the most popular and best multi-language translation app you can find. As the name suggests. It is powered my Google so expect simplicity from this app. There aren’t many features, namely voice input, history, favorite bookmark, text-to-speech and SMS translator. The translation is precise and faster than any other translator app out there. Google Translate supports Chinese, Filipino, Croatian, Czech, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Icelandic, Marathi, Mongolian, Nepali, Polish, Punjabi, Slovak, Somali, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu, Welsh, Zulu and 58 other languages and will be updated time to time. You can download it from here.

Word Reference:

Word ReferenceWord Reference is a decent language translation app and a dictionary which includes definition, synonyms, antonyms and conjugations. Like Google Translate, this app also supports multi-language but not as wide as Google Translate. It can translate English to Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, Czech, Greek, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, Korean. Arabic; Spanish to French and Portuguese. In addition to this, you can look up on its forum and ask real people for translation if you aren’t satisfied with the translation provided by the app. You can download it from here.

Lyngo:

lyngoLyngo is completely a voice translation app. This app is particularly useful when you don’t understand what the person is saying. This app also has multi-language support with includes 30 language. Voice translation is available for English (UK, US, AUS), French (EU, CAN), Italian, German, Spanish (MX, US), Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Taiwanese, Dutch, Korean, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Polish, Portuguese (EU, BR), Russian and you can also use this app without voice translation for Slovak, Greek, Hindi, Thai, Turkish, Arabic, Catalan and Bahasa. You can download it from here.

Word Lens:

word lensThis app is unique to above mention apps. Word Lens is not a regular voice or text translator, it actually translates the printed word on a photograph, poster, road sign, and everything else. In my opinion, this app is more useful that the above app when travelling abroad as it’ll help you understand poster, signs, indications, and especially food menus. Network is not required for this app to work, just point and shoot and the result will be displayed on your screen. Translation is available for English to Russian, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese and vice versa. The accuracy of translation depends upon the quality of text printed. For better result keep the printed text in focus by holding it at one hand length away and turn on flashlight. You can download it from here.
