This following guide will unlock the bootloader, install custom recovery and root OnePlus 5T. The process is quite simple and the steps are easy to understand. This rooting guide is broken down into 3 main parts – unlocking the bootloader, installing custom recovery and gaining root access. Here’s how to root OnePlus 5T.

Root OnePlus 5T

Prerequisites

  1. Download and install ADB for Windows from here.
  2. Make sure your device is charged up to at least 60% to avoid any complications due to unexpected shutdown.
  3. Make sure you have backed up all your data. This procedure will erase all your data.
  4. Enable USB Debugging from Settings > Developer Options.
  5. Enable OEM Unlocking from Settings > Developer Options. And make sure to check if it is enabled everytime you reboot your device.

Unlocking Bootloader

Step 1: Power off your device completely. Or, press and hold the power button and select “reboot to bootloader”. You can skip Step 2 if you chose to do the latter.

Step 2: Boot into Fastboot mode by holding Volume Up and Power buttons.

Step 3: Connect your device to your PC.

Step 4: On the desktop, hold shift and right click and select Open command window here or Open PowerShell here.

Step 5: Type fastboot devices. This will show the list of all the connected devices. If you cannot see your device, you might want to redo the previous steps and check if you’ve installed the drivers correctly.

Step 6: Type the following: fastboot oem unlock

Step 7: You will see a warning. Press Volume buttons to select Yes and hit the Power button to execute.

Installing Custom Recovery

After the device reboots, do the following;

  1. Enable USB Debugging from Settings > Developer Options.
  2. Enable OEM Unlocking from Settings > Developer Options.
  3. Enable Advanced Reboot from Settings > Developer Options.

Now follow the following steps:

Step 1: Download Magisk and copy it to the internal storage. Download TWRP Recovery 

Step 2: Boot into bootloader by pressing the Power button and selecting Reboot to bootloader.

Step 3: Connect your device to your PC.

Step 4: Open Command Prompt / PowerShell and enter the following command;

                fastboot flash recovery (file name).img

Step 5: Once the process is done, do not press Fastboot Reboot button. Instead, unplug your device and manually boot into recovery by pressing the Volume Down button a couple of times. You’ll see Recovery mode in red at the top. Hit the power button to reboot. Immediately refer to the below steps. Do not reboot into OS yet.

Rooting OnePlus 5T

Step 1: Boot into Recovery by pressing Volume Down a couple of times.

Step 2: Swipe to enable modifications.

Step 3: Set your preferred language.

Step 4: Tap on Install and select the Magisk file.

Step 5: Swipe to install.

Step 6: Reboot System.
