Through the Archive Chat feature, users have the capability to Hide and Unhide Chats in WhatsApp from view while also being able to recover them later. The feature organizes your chat list through separate designation of conversations to the archived section.
How to Hide (Archive) a Chat?
Below are the steps for hiding or archiving the chats:
On Android:
- Open WhatsApp.
- Select the chat from the list that you wish to make invisible.
- Long-press on the chat.
- Tap the Archive icon (a box with a downward arrow) at the top.
- The chat moves to the Archived Chats section.
On iOS:
- Open WhatsApp.
- Press the left swipe button over the chat you want to conceal from view.
- Tap Archive.
- A hidden message in WhatsApp becomes inaccessible in the main chat list while it goes to the Archived Chats folder.

How to UnHide (Un-Archive) a Chat ?
Below are the steps for unhiding or unarchiving the chats:
On Android:
- The top area of your chat list becomes visible.
- Tap Archived Chats.
- Select the target chat by pressing it for an extended period of time.
- Tap the Unarchive icon (box with an upward arrow).
On iOS:
- Proceed to the upper part of the chat list.
- Tap Archived Chats.
- Locate the chat by swiping left then select Unarchive by tapping on it.
Important Notes:
When you enable “Keep Chats Archived” new messages will not reveal hidden archived chats.
To prevent messages from remaining in archival state you need to access Settings > Chats > Keep Chats Archived then toggle the setting off.
