This is a common issue among Android users. A user on Android Central forums had the same issue. The user stated, “This happens all the time whenever texting / messaging / Facebook if you click on an auto-populated word or corrected word. Have to restart the phone. Very annoying”.
You do not need to worry though. This issue is easily fixable. Just try any of the methods stated below. If one doesn’t work, try another. One will definitely work.
Method 1: Force close keyboard
This should be your very first response when you see “Unfortunately, Android keyboard has stopped” error. To do so, follow the steps below;
Step 1: Go to System Settings.
Step 2: Find Apps or Application or something similar and tap on it.
Step 3: Go to All tab or tap on the 3 dot menu and select Show system apps. This will vary depending on what device you use. No matter what device you use, there will be an option to show all apps.
Step 4: Scroll till you find Android Keyboard or the keyboard you are currently using.
Step 5: Select it and tap on Force Close. You could clear the cache too. This will stop the app and restart it next time you use it.
Now, exit Settings and open any app that you can use the keyboard on. You should not get the error.
Method 2: Restart device
Most of the time a simple restart can fix common issues. You could even shut down your device and turn it on again.
Press and hold the Power button and restart/power off your device. After the device boots up, use the keyboard again an see if the error is gone. Most of the time this method should work. If it doesn’t, see other methods.
Method 3: Clear data of Dictionary (if available)
Since dictionary app is linked with the keyboard app, some times it could be the culprit. If your device has a separate app for the dictionary, you could use this method. Follow the steps below;
Step 1: Open System Settings.
Step 2: Select Apps or Application Manager or something similar depending on your device.
Step 3: Select Show all apps or go to All apps tab.
Step 4: Find the Dictionary app and tap on it.
Step 5: Tap on Clear cache.
Step 6: Tap on Clear Data.
Method 4: Update Keyboard / Firmware
Sometimes an update is rolled out to fix such issues. If you are using a keyboard from Google Play Store or store from device manufacturers, see if there is a pending update. If you have downloaded it from the Google Play Store, follow the following steps to update;
Step 1: Open Google Play Store.
Step 2: Slide from left to right to reveal the menu.
Step 3: Tap on My apps and games.
Step 4: See if there is an update for the keyboard app.
Step 5: Tap on update. Also, check if there is a pending firmware update. Go to Settings > About Phone > Updates.
