If you aren’t using Google Authenticator to secure your Google account; you should be. Google Authenticator app generated 2-step verification codes on your phone. However, if you have enabled Google Authenticator but changed your device, then switching the authenticator to it is not a straight-forward work. Here’s how to switch Google Authenticator to a new device.
Switch Google Authenticator to a new device
Before you start, you will still need your old device in your possession with the Google Authenticator app still installed. Now, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Download Google Authenticator app on your new device.
Step 2: Got to Google Authenticator page in a browser. Enter your Google credentials when prompted.
Step 3: Find Authenticator app tab. Click on Change phone.
Step 4: You will be prompted to select what phone you have: Android or iPhone. Since this is an Android tutorial, we’ll select Android. However, the switching process is same on both platforms.
Step 5: After you select Android, click on Next.
Step 6: Now, open the Google Authenticator app on your new device and tap on Begin setup > Scan barcode.
Step 7: Scan the barcode displayed in the browser and then click Next on the browser. You will have to enter the authenticator code that you’ll see on your Android device.
Step 8: Click on Verify.
Step 9: If you’re using the authenticator for other apps then you need to login to those apps individually and remove the old Authenticator app and add the new device.
Step 10: Now, open the Google Authenticator app on your old device, tap on the edit button and delete the authenticator codes. You can now uninstall the app from your old device.
