Fix Error 97 when sending SMS
Causes
After looking into the error, we have narrowed down the causes to two reasons;
Corrupt Cache: Certain settings and configurations are cached by the SMS app to reduce the time to load and make the experience smooth. But after some time, these cache data might get corrupt and trigger the error.
Corrupt Data: Sometimes the data from the SMS app might get corrupted and trigger the error. This corrupted data can mess with system processes and stop text messages from being sent.
Now that you know what might be the probable cause to Error 97, let’s take a look at the possible solutions.
Clear Cache
If the culprit here is the cache, clearing it should get rid of this error. What you need to do is simple – clear the SMS app’s cache. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Open the System Settings from wither the notification panel by tapping on the gear icon on the top or through the apps drawer by tapping on the Settings icon.
Step 2: Scroll down on Settings and find Applications or Apps depending on the phone you have. Tap on it.
Step 3: Find Messages on the list of apps and tap on it.
Step 4: If you cannot find the messaging app, it might be because it is hidden. If that is the case, tap on the 3-dot menu icon on the top right corner and select ‘Show System Apps’.
Step 5: After you’re inside the message app’s settings page, tap on Storage.
Step 6: Tap on the Clear Cache button and wait till it’s done.
Step 7: Reboot your phone.
Clear Data
If clearing the cache didn’t work, clearing the data should do the trick. Clearing data is similar to clearing the cache. All you have to do is follow steps 1 to 5 from above and instead of tapping on the Clear Cache button, tap on Clear Data. Make sure you reboot your phone after.
Note that clearing data on some of the phones will clear all your messages so make sure you back up any important messages. This is not the case for all phones though, but better safe than sorry.
