How to setup ADB on Windows and Mac

Before you venture into the world of Android and rooting, you will have to know what ADB is. If you have already went through numerous rooting guides, performance guides and what not, it is most likely that you have come across the term ADB. Follow this guide to learn how to setup ADB on Windows or Mac. Note that this guide is written keeping in mind that the readers are beginners.

How to setup ADB on Windows and Mac

ADB or Android Debug Bridge is a command-line tool used for communicating with an Android device. It is bundled with Android SDK. So before you start to setup ADB, we will need to download Android SDK. Note that since SDK runs on JAVA, you will need to make sure you have JDK installed and running on your computer. You can get JAVA from its respective site.

How to setup ADB on Windows

Step 0: If you are on Windows 10, you will have to disable driver signature enforcement to be able to install ADB. To do so, follow the steps below.

  1. Go to Settings > Update and security > Recovery > click on Restart now under Advance Startup.
  2. Once you are on the screen as shown below, go to Troubleshoot > Advance options > Startup Settings > Click on Restart.
  3. When you on the screen as shown below, tap F7 to disable signature enforcement and restart.

Step 00: If you are on Windows 8, follow the steps below to enter advance startup settings.

  1. Go to PC Settings > General > click on Restart now under Advance startup.

Step 1: Download the Android SDK package for Windows. You can find it here.

Step 2: Extract the files inside your C:\ drive. Make sure it is not inside any other folders.

Step 3: Double click on the SDK Manager. If you don’t have JAVA running on your computer then you will be presented with an error.

Step 4: Make sure everything is un-ticked except Android SDK Platform tools and Google USB Driver.

Step 5: Click on the Install button. This will download and install the platform tools package that contains ADB.

Step 6: Now we have to define the path where ADB is installed.

Step 9: Go to C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools and take note of this path.

Step 10: Go to Desktop > right click on Computer > select Properties. If on Windows 10, open file explorer > right click on This PC  located on the left pane > click on Properties.

Step 11: Click on Advance System Settings.

Step 12: Click on Advance tab and then on Environment Variables.

Step 13: Select Path variable and click Edit.

Step 14: Write or paste the path that we noted on Step 9. Click OK.

Step 15: Apply all the changes.

Step 16: You now have ADB installed on your Windows and is ready to use. You can access it anytime by typing adb on cmd.

How to setup ADB on Mac

Step 1: Download the Android SDK package for Mac OS from here.

Step 2: Extract the files in your Home directory.

Step 3: You will have a folder named android-sdk-macosx.

Step 4: Navigate to android-sdk-macosx and double click on android to execute SDK manager.

Step 5: Make sure everything is un-checked except Android SDK tools and Android SDK Platform-tools.

Step 6: Tap on Install. If you don’t have JAVA installed then you will receive a popup from here you can click on More Info and download and install it.

Step 7: The SDK manager will now download the platform tools with contains ADB.

Step 8: Now we have to define the path where ADB is located.

Step 9: Open Terminal and type the following:

Step 10: This will open the .bash_profile file. Now enter the following:

[quote]export PATH=${PATH}:~/android-sdk-macosx/tools

export PATH=${PATH}:~/android-sdk-macosx/platform-tools[/quote]

Step 11: Reboot your computer.

Step 12: ADB is now installed on your Mac. You can access it anytime by typing adb on the terminal.
