How to set up Smart Lock and Trusted Devices in Android 5.0 Lollipop?

Everyday, we unlock our smartphone a lot of times (probably hundreds of times a day). This is so obvious, we are so obsessed with our smartphones, even more than most of the basic needs these days. And for us to use our phone, we have to unlock it everytime, as we have to lock it while it is not being used. There are many ways to lock the phone, especially for the security purposes in Android, be it pin, pattern, face unlock or password. It is good for users, but equally boring. Even for very small purposes, for example- to change a radio station or favourite a song, we have to draw the pattern or input the password. We had always been expecting it to be easier for us, and boom! Here is the solution. In the latest version of Android, Android 5.0 Lollipop, it will be easy to unlock our phone using the smart lock feature. We can set the trusted devices using Bluetooth or NFC, and whenever such Bluetooth device or an NFC tag is in range of your phone, the security lock will be disabled. If you don’t know about this feature but like to have it in your device, here is a guide on how to set up Smart Lock and Trusted Devices in Android 5.0 Lollipop.

set up Smart Lock and Trusted Devices

The most important thing to set up smart lock and Trusted Devices in Android 5.0 Lollipop is that you must have a security lock on, either a pin, password or pattern. If you don’t have any security lock on, you will not be allowed to use this feature. That means, enable the security lock in your device first,  if you don’t have it already.

The first step required for you is to sync the Bluetooth or NFC with the devices which are nearby you, which can be the car, bluetooth speaker, smartwatch or anything. When you have the two devices connected, you will get the notification in your smartphone. There, you will have option to ‘add a trusted device’ where you will have to select the device you trust. OR; alternatively, you can also set the trusted devices manually from your smartphone operation on Android 5.0 Lollipop. For this, Settings » Security » Smart Lock  »  Trusted Devices. Connect the devices from there, and your trusted devices will be set up. You can also add the trusted places, such as your home or work locations, using the Google Maps. In  addition, there is the option of ‘Smart Face’ too, where you can tap the “Trusted face” button in the Smart Lock settings. Just look at your smartphone to set up your face, and it will be set. While trying to use the smart face feature, you will get the warning of it not being as secure as other options.

You are done now. Whenever your smartphone running on Android 5.0 Lollipop with a security lock on comes near the trusted devices (within the range of their Bluetooth or NFC) that you have set up, it will be unlocked itself. Opposite to that, when you move the devices outside the range, then your smartphone will be locked automatically. OR you can just go to your home or work location, check your phone and find it unlocked. The face unlock feature is not new though, as it was being used by some of the devices, from as past as the ICS version.
