How to remove a Google account from your Android or iOS device

When you have set up your Google account in your android, everything on your phone is now synced to that account. This includes your contacts, calendar, emails, app lists, and so on. Remove a Google account from your Android

Method 1: From Accounts / Users & Accounts

Step 1: Open device Settings.

Step 2: Go to Accounts / Users & Account.

Step 3: Tap on the Google account you want to remove.

Step 4: Select the Remove Account button. Confirm when asked.

If you are trying to remove the primary Google account – the one that you used when you used the device for the first time; it will be helpful if you set up a new Google account first before removing the first one.

If you are unable to remove the account (happens in some cases), then you can disable it by going to Apps > Gmail > Disable. This will only disable the email though. If you want to disable the Account altogether, follow the steps below.

Method 2: Manually

  • Open the file browsing app of your choice on your android.
  • Open data/ system folder and delete “accounts.db”.
  • If you can’t find the .db file, go to /data/system/ sync delete “accounts.xml”.

Note: You should open the data folder inside your Android’s root or primary location. You will not find the system folder inside the data folder of your Android’s external SDcard.

Remove a Google account from your iOS

Through Gmail app

Step 1: Open the Gmail app.

Step 2: Tap on the hamburger menu icon or slide the menu.

Step 3: Select Manage Account.

Step 4: Tap on Edit.

Step 5: Hit the Remove button next to the account you want to remove. Confirm the action.

Step 6: Tap on Done.

Through Safari

Step 1: Open the Safari app.

Step 2: In the URL bar, type google.com, and hit enter.

Step 3: On the top right corner, you should find your profile icon. Tap on it and then select Sign Out.

Step 4: Tap Sign in and then select Sign in with a different account.

Step 5: Tap Remove and then select the account you want to remove.

Step 6: Select Done.

From Mail

Step 1: Open Settings.

Step 2: Tap on Passwords & Account.

Step 3: From the list of all the accounts, tap the one you want to delete.

Step 4: Select the Delete Account button located at the bottom of the page.

Step 5: Confirm the action when Delete from My iPhone warning appears.

    • Use File expert app with root access and remount SYNC folder with “write” permission, then you will be allowed to delete the file.

    • Usually, what will work is disabling and then re-enabling all of the Google services. However, this time Google Play Services was greyed out and wouldn’t disable. I noticed that if you remove the Google account before setting up Airwatch (or from what I’ve read before setting a device PIN) it lets you remove it.

  2. Had this error redownloading Game of War… Fixed it by going to system settings>> accounts>>select your Google account>>press menu and select Sync… after Syncing I reopened Playstore and downloaded and installed the game without a problem.

  5. Won’t work for me, I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830i (It’s quite old, 2011 I believe.)
    I really need to remove an account without deleting the photos and videos on the phone, help..?!
