How to Fix Google Assistant Voice Command Not Working

WE got to admit that Google Assistant has made out Android experience so much better. All we need to do is speak the phrase “Ok Google” followed by the thing we want the phone to do and it gets it done. Good times. But Google Assistant sometime doesn’t work as intended and you end up saying “Ok Google” over and over again to an unresponsive phone. You can fix this easily though. Here’s how to fix Google Assistant Voice Command not working. This guide focuses on the Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL, but this should be the general solution for all Android.

Fix Google Assistant Voice Command Not Working

There are a couple of things you can do and check to see if your device is not the culprit. If it is not a hardware problem, then you might fix it. The chances are it is just an unconfigured setting. This problem is widely seen on Google Pixel devices, especially Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL. Below are the things you can do to fix Ok Google.

Check Language Settings

There’s a chance that the Google Assistant is not responding to your command because you’re speaking the wrong language. English is set as the default language but it is still worth checking out if the settings are correctly configured. To do so;

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Voice. It is under Search.
  3. Select the preferred language from the menu.

Although there are tons of languages to choose from, it is best to select English as other languages are subpar.

Check Microphone

Since Google Assistant is a voice-based, it relies on uninterrupted access to the phone’s mic. When you open Google’s app, there should be a microphone icon on the right side of the search bar. If the icon is dotted, then you have a problem with your mic.

Check if the mic is blocked with dust and debris. Take a small pin and carefully poke around it. If it was blocked by dust, this should often fix the problem. If it doesn’t, check the microphone settings inside Google’s app. Sometimes the app may not have permission to access the phone’s mic.

Disable Power Saving Mode

This is particularly the issue with Google Pixel devices. If the power suing mode is on, the Ok Google functionality gets automatically turned off.

The voice commands do not work on Google Pixel 3, 4 and its variants if the battery saver is turned on. So, disabling the battery saver should fix this problem. To do so;

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Battery.
  3. Tap on Battery Saver.
  4. Turn it off.

Retain Voice Model

For some unknown reasons, sometimes Google Assistant does not retain the commands you give it. It could be time to retain the voice model. To do so;

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Google and then tap on Search.
  3. Tap on Voice.
  4. Check if access with Voice Match is enabled
  5. Tap on Retain voice model and then say Ok Google and Hey Google when prompted.

Some Extras to Try

  1. Reboot or Shutdown.
  2. Check if Ok Google detection is enabled from Settings > Voice > Voice Match detection.
  3. Clear app data and cache from Settings > Apps > Google.
  4. Check for updates.
