Nowadays, a lot of people experience the RPC:S-5:AEC-0 error while trying to update or install apps from the Google Play Store.
This error will pop up right after you have almost completed the update or install. You will even see the install bar reach the very end and then the annoying error like “Update for “Gmail” could not be downloaded due to an error. (Error retrieving information from the server. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0])”. However, this is a minor error on an app like Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Dropbox, Viber etc and can be resolved by following these few steps:
Methods to solve RPC:S-5:AEC-0 error
Method 1:
- Open system settings
- Go to Applications (or Apps) >> All
- From all apps select Google Play Store >> Clear Cache and Uninstall updates
- Again, from All>>Download Manager >> Clear Cache and Data
- Finally, All >> Google Services Framework >> Clear Cache and Data
- Now, rerun Google play store.
Method 2:
- Go to system settings>> Accounts>> Google>> remove your Gmail account
- Now from settings>> Apps>> All> Force stop, Clear data and cache for Google Play Store, Google Service Framework and Download Manager (like in method 1)
- Now again go to settings>> Accounts>> Google>> Add your Gmail account
- Restart your android and then accept all the Google terms and setup Google settings
- Rerun Google Play Store and update or install your app.
Clearing caches to Google Play Store and Google Services Framework worked for some and that doesn’t take time. The second method will definitely work but takes more work. I hope you’ve solved your RPC:S-5:AEC-0 error issue.

Thank you for helping me
yes it worked…thanks
Awesome fix.. thanks
Thanks so much it worked
It has not worked
Followed advice. Did not work. Wrote to google. They know the prblm but no fix yet. Quite disturbing as this prblm apperared yesterday out of the blue to my knowledge. Sorry
Sorry that it didn’t work for you. You are right its a well known problem but I guess there is no “one solution for all”. I will try to find some alternative fixes..
I found a working solution on internet
Delete cache and clear data in google services
Remove your account
Re sign in and it is done
But don’t ask me why this one worked on my moto xxom wifi only
Best
J
These instructions didn’t work for me, if you remove your account and re-add it it fixes things. Now to get back to my updated Google Play store.
Worked!
Thank you, I was starting to fear that my new device was broken 🙁
Thanks!
Method 2 worked! (Y)
I followed the 1st set of instructions and now I do not have Google Play Store. How are u suppose to rerun google play store. I am unable to install or update anything. Both google play store and download manager are not listed anymore in apps.
Thanks
Hi Kathy,
I am really not sure how clearing data and cache uninstalled your Google Play Store. But don’t worry here is the Androidpolice‘s link to the apk file: Download Google Play Store 4.2.3
Yeah I am fixed. Found that the play store app was disabled, changed that and then followed the second set of directions and now I am up and running.
Thanks
Go to Application manager, go to ALL tab (swipe to the left to move over to all), go to the BOTTOM OF THE LIST, you should see Play Store, and Downloads or Download Mgr. under disabled, click them and enable them….. you CAN NOT LOOSE PLAY STORE, IT HARDWIRED INTO THE PHONE SOFTWARE……. IT’S THERE.
Got this problem installing CM 10.1.2, and method 2 fixed it! Thanks!
thank you so much followed your instructions to the T and it worked perfectly. Thank you again
First method did not work for me. 2nd method did the trick – Thanks!
Works like a charm… option 1…. thanks
Its working, now life is back to normal.
Method 1 didn’t work, but method 2 did. Thanks!
Method 2 worked for me! Thanks for the fix!
thank you for your valuable help, I been able to solve my proble by metod 2 thank a lot (y) (Y)
It’s bad becouse it chaina
I tried this and it worked, but will the play store automatically update again?
Just wanted to post my thanks as well. Option 1 did nothing for me, but option 2 did the trick! Many, many thanks.
Thanks. I tried Method 1 and also calling Google, but Method 2 (a variation of it) finally worked. The key piece was the removal of my Google Account rather than the clearing of the data/cache for the various related apps.
Thank you very much, method 2 worked fine for me!!
Hey! Method 2 solved my problem. Thanks so much!
Method#1 did not work
Method#2 worked for me and able to get updates now….Thanks.
This doesn’t work for me. I canot remove my Google Account. The only option is to start the sync. Im using an Nexus 4 with Andoid 4.2.
Why is the option to remove the account not available: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9vik94k6vchmtoa/Screenshot_2013-07-26-16-47-03.png
HI pascal,
I saw your screenshot. To see the “remove account” option you will have to click on your gmail account, “*****@gmail.com” ,at the top of the screen. Then go to its settings to remove account.
Maybe I can help you out. If your device is not rooted and you have only only one google account you will have to do factory reset to remove it. But there is a workaround if you are rooted. I searched this website and found this post:
https://appslova.com/how-to-delete-google-account-without-factory-reset-in-android/
#2 worked… Believe clearing data on Google Framework Services (attempting to prompt for the 4.3 update) caused the issue to begin with.
Nexus 4: Thank you, the second method worked for me.
Method 2 worked. THANKS!
Method 2 worked for me on my Nexus 4. Thanks a lot 🙂
Method 2 worked for me thank you – I tried #1 but it didn’t work.
I think the trick is to add and then re add your Google account.
Also, in the instructions you say to remove your ‘GMAIL’ account – this should read as ‘Google’ – just so people don’t get confused.
Thanks again – this saved me after I did a force OTA (which worked by the way!) to 4.3
Thank you! Worked for me method #2 for android 4.3!
You already have 4.3?? that’s awesome.. Which device? Don’t tell me Nexus 7…
try this
This did the trick for me
Go to settings/app.manager/all
Delete data + cache :
Google Play Store
Google Play-services
Google Services Framework
Hangouts
Market-feedback agent (important)
Then delete google-account(data/system/user/0/ find the accounts.db file and cut and paste it somewhere else)
Restart the phone and then re-add google-account( paste your accounts.db file earlier to it’s original location).
p/s~Your device need to be rooted to remove/delete google account without a factory reset.
Thanks.. Worked for my rooted Galaxy S3
Option 1 didnt work and with option 2 I cannot remove my gmail account. Thoughts as to why? I have Galaxy Nexus
Hi BIll,
Looks like you only have only one Google account or maybe older version of Android. But if your Android is rooted you can manually delete the Google accounts:
Just find the account.db file in your internal storage and then delete it or rename it to something else. Now you can re-add your account in your settings. In Google Play Store you will again be prompted to enter your google account information.
If I’m not clear here is the link:

I had tried the first method before without success. Second method worked. Thanks
It would be nice to know why it stopped working in the first place, thanks for your tip.
Up and running once again.
Second method worked on Nexus 4 4.3, had this error after updating! Thanks!
I used method 2 straight away and it worked!
Thank you so much!
Had to use the second method to get Google Play Store to work again on both my Nexus 7 and Nexus 4.
I screwed both up trying to force the early download of the new 4.3 OTA. Has taught me to be more patient.
Am so grateful.
Many Thanks,
Mike
Same with me 😀 But second solution repaired everything. Thanks!
method 2 worked fine for my galaxy s3 even without restarting android
Tons of thanks… it worked for me
Fixed! thks :)))
After trying out many different solutions that i found online, including both of these, i was unsuccessful. What ended up fixing mine was to just do a factory reset. After i did this the problem was resolved. So if these steps are unsuccessful then a factory reset will fix you problem.
Hey Dude…Looks like we’re in the same boat.. Unfortunately, I had to factory reset too..
Method 2 worked for me
gnex 4.3
thanks!
Removing the account and re sign in worked for me.. thanks 🙂
Made the downloaded-apps list dissappear but apart from that method 2 worked. Hope I still get notifications about updates now. thanks:)

Method two cleared the problem. Many thanks,
Thank you , method 2 works!!
Every other “fix” I found didn’t work. I did Method 2 and I’m ‘all good’ !!!
THANKS !!!
Method 2 worked fine. I had almost given up after the unhelpful non-advice from Google. You have made my day.
Many thanks.
method 2 worked for me
yipppiee….
it worked!!!
method 2 worked for me.. unlink and re-linking the gmail account !!
Thanks a ton!!!!
😀
I would like to say I followed a fix for the package invalid problem on this site. It didn’t work and ended up creating this server problem. I did all methods in this article and it created more problems. Many apps won’t open now. Do not listen to this person!! I followed each instruction exactly too.
GREAT!!!
Tnx a lot☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
If i remove the account and re-add it, will I lose my apps the their data (eg data stored on certain games, etc.)?
Hi Atoraya,
Removing the Gmail account won’t affect your apps data.
Brilliant. Thanks method 1 worked for me 🙂
This worked. Thanks
Yes its really work
It worked! Thanks
i did method 1, and then google play said ‘no connection’ and the same with method two. 🙁
really its work,,very thanks . . .
Had this error with my brand new Huawei Ascend G525 out of the box. Method 1 didn’t work for me, but method 2 worked like a charm. THANKS SOOOOOO MUCH!!! <3<3<3
Method 2 works well.Thanks a lot!
thx, method 2 worked for me using 4.2.2
Method 2 worked for me using a BRAND new Nexus 4 with Android 4.3. Silly that Google would ship something like this that didn’t work correctly out of the box. I was not able to download ANY apps from Play. Hope this takes care of whatever was wrong.
No one at the phone company that I am with could help me with this, so I searched for help myself instead (sometimes you can only rely on yourself!) and this advise did the trick, thank you so much!!
Well that worked. Don’t know why it cropped up, we have been changing channels on the router of late though.. I have 4.1.1 nothing major changed. was just installing fall live wallpapers and error 500 showed up. went to check movies and the above showed up. This fixed both errors.
Method 1 worked like a charm. Thank you!
Method 1 worked. Thank You! Works Great
Thank you so much! Method 2 worked on my Galaxy S3 (even if some of the warning messsages I got seemed kinda scary).
Method 1 worked perfectly! Droid Razr Maxx.
GOD BLESS
method 2 worked flawlessly
Method 2 seems to have worked on my android tablet thank you so much
Thank you Method 2 worked. 🙂

It worked perfectly. but some of the applications still complain the same thing. do i need to go through the process again and again when it refuses to take applications?
Please help as none of theses methods are working for me! this is frustratinG…
