Android in December 2014: KitKat grows up, Lollipop still negligible

Google has recently released the distribution of versions of Android in December 2014, which shows that KitKat is on growing phase, which now runs on 39.1% of all android devices. This is a significant growth, which was 33.9% last month.

The increase in the share of KitKat is the most obvious reason for the decrease in the number of other versions: all the previous versions are on decreasing phase, as shown by the distribution. The JellyBean version still holds 46%, in which 4.1.x has 19.2%, 4.2.x has 20.3% and 4.3 has 6.5%. In November, the Jellybean holded 48.7%, and the change not so dynamic. The 4.0.3-4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich version is down to 6.7%, which was 7.8% last month. The Gingerbread version runs on 7.8% of devices, down from 9.1% last month. 2.2 Froyo is still struggling after so many years of its release, we can see that 0.4% of devices operate on the old version, which was 0.5% last month.

If all the three sub-versions combined, Jellybean holds the largest record, about 7% more than the KitKat. Devices running on Jellybean not getting the major version updates is the main reason behind this, and we can see the devices being released with Jellybean out of box even today (though these are usually the cheap devices, minor local brands).

After about almost two months, Lollipop is still nowhere in the list, as the version less than 0.1% distribution are not shown. This means, the sale of Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 are not that fantastic. Even if the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, and several other devices which have got the Lollipop update till now are combined, we can see they occupy less than 0.1%.

With the increase of KitKat and decrease of Jellybean, we can expect them to be equal in about a couple of months. The rise in KitKat is also the sign for the rise of Lollipop, and we hope Lollipop makes it up to the chart by next month. 2.2 Froyo is all set to leave the place soon, but it will take a lot of time for Gingerbread for the same.
