How to Root Samsung Galaxy S9?

Samsung Galaxy S9 is Samsung’s newest flagship with improved hardware and features than its predecessor. It sports a massive 5.8 inch OLED quad HD Infinity Display, a Snapdragon 845 and Exynos 9810. The storage size of 64GB / 256GB with expandable storage up to 400GB will ensure that you never run out of space. The 12 megapixels primary camera and an 8MP secondary camera will fulfill your photographic need with beautiful pictures. Galaxy S9 is a powerful device, but it can reach it limits if you root it. Here’s how to root Samsung Galaxy S9.

Before we start, note that;

1. This method will void the warranty and trip Knox.
2. This will wipe your data, so make sure you back up first.
3. You will lose Samsung Pay and Secure folder. Unrooting won’t reverse this.
4. You may not be able to run some banking apps. Magisk Hide or SU Hide can be used as a workaround.
5. You may not get OTA updates.
6. You can unroot by flashing the stock firmware.

OEM Unlock and Root

Samsung introduced OEM Unlock control remotely since Note 8 and flashing custom binary removes it. Rebooting in this state give a custom binary error and you have to flash a stock firmware. If you do not know if your device has OEM issue, you can still use OEM Patch.

Step 1: Enable Developer options if you haven’t. To do so, go to Settings > About Phone > Software information > Tap build number 7 times.

Step 2: Go to Settings > Developer options.

Step 3: Enable OEM Unlock. If you do not have this options, it may appear after 7 days. This is no workaround to this.

Step 4: Download this file and copy it to the external storage.

Step 5: Download TWRP recovery.

Step 6: Power off the device.

Step 7: Press Volume Down + Bixby + Power to reboot into download mode. Press Volume Up to continue.

Step 8: Download Odin. Open it and disable “Auto Reboot” option.

Step 9: Select TWRP tar image form AP tab and click on Start. Make sure you’ve connected your device using the USB cable.

Step 10: Once flashed, you will see “Passed” in Odin.

Step 11: Disconnect the device and hold Volume Down + Power buttons till the screen goes off.

Step 12: Now, Press Volume Up + Bixby + Power buttons immediately to reboot into TWRP.

Step 13: Select Wipe > Format Data and type “yes”. This will erase all your data.

Step 14: Once completed, go to Reboot and select Recovery.

Step 15: When it boot to TWRP, go to Install and select the OEM issue file you previously downloaded.

Step 16: Select OEM Patch.

Step 17: IF you are on a stock kernel, select Patch Stock Kernel.

Step 18: When done, reboot system.

Step 19: After the device boots, go to Settings > Developer Options > look for OEM Unlock. If it is there, it is safe to reboot the device.
