YouTube has undergone some major design changes for both its mobile and desktop apps; the biggest change being a brand new logo for the online video service. The logo gets rid of the red background of the “Tube” and places a play button upfront. This is already an iconic shorthand for the company. According to Google, the new logo will work better “across a variety of devices, even on the tiniest screens”.
Brand New Logo? Or an entire brand new look?
“We have the word tube in a tube,” says Christopher Bettig, the head of YouTube’s art department. Tube is basically a slang word for TV; and vacuum tubes powered TVs back then. Today, vacuum tubes have nothing to do with YouTube. YouTube streams its video content to 1.5 billion users every month via the internet. Hence, YouTube got its biggest aesthetic makeover. YouTube is getting a new color palette with its brand new logo. A new typeface and other incremental changes to the form and functionality of its desktop and mobile app.
Likewise, both the desktop and mobile apps are updated to bring them in line with the Material Design aesthetic. The Material Design asthetic extends across Google’s properties like Android, Search, and Docs. Eventually, a popular feature on the desktop version of YouTube – variable speed playback will be available in the mobile version as well. The design team also promises that some well-received features of the mobile app will soon migrate over to desktop. For instance, there’s a mini-player in YouTube app that allows you to watch a video and browse others at the same time. The mini-player is being tested for the desktop version. Thus,YouTube app’s new adaptive video player can adjust its size for vertical videos as well.
