How to use App Permissions in Android Marshmallow

Android now gives you full control over what 3rd party app can access with App Permissions. Here’s how to use App Permissions in Android Marshmallow.

App permissions allow apps to perform various tasks in your device but some of these permissions may perform tasks that you may think are totally unnecessary for the said app. For instance, there is no reason for a photo editing app to access your SMS or Dialer. Permissions such as these can unnecessarily use up your data or even view your personal details.

In Marshmallow, you would be notified and prompted to grants access of an app is trying to access things that you have disabled for the said app. If you haven’t restricted any permissions, then the app will do its thing with your knowing what it is. You can control that permissions are allowing to the specific app even after it is installed on your device.

Adjusting your app permission is a pretty easy and straight forward task. Here’s how to use App Permissions in Android Marshmallow.

Step 1: To access App Permission in Android Marshmallow, go to Settings > choose Apps.

Step 2: Tap on the Gear icon located at the top right corner if the Apps menu.

Step 3: Now, choose App permissions.

Step 4: Here, you will find that the permissions are grouped into types. These types could be Calendar, Camera, Microphone, SMS, Body Sensors, etc.

Step 5: Browse each of the type and if you find anything unusual and totally unnecessary, disable it. To disable a permission, slide the toggle next to it. You can always change this later if you need to.

Although you can see what permissions an app needs when you tap the install button in the Google Play Store; there is no option to restrict the permissions. It is a Take it or Leave it situation.  But now you can control these permissions after you have installed the app but it would be great if you can choose the permissions before you install it.
