While it may not be the case with newer flagships, external storage helps you free up some space to make your phone run faster. The newer devices come with abundant internal storage which for some people is more than they would need, but some older models and budget models do not have this luxury. The best thing the users with such devices can do is hope they can use external storage. This article focuses on moving apps and files from internal to external storage using manual and automatic methods. We’ll also discuss the way you can set external storage as the default storage. Here’s how to transfer files from external storage to internal storage.
Transfer Files From External Storage to Internal Storage
Method 1: Manually moving apps
This works on Android version 4.2 and above. You must have developer options enabled. Follow the steps;
Step 1: Open Settings.
Step 2: Go to Application Manager / Apps. This differs from device to device, but you will not have a hard time figuring this out.
Step 3: Tap on the name of the application you want to move.
Step 4: You should find an option called “Move to External Storage” or something similar. Tap on it to move it to external storage and free up some space in internal storage.
If you do not see this option, it could be probably because the app is a system app or this feature is not available on your device. You can use app movers for the later.
Method 2: Using App Mover – an automatic process
There are some app movers available in the Google Play Store, but the best one in my opinion (and the one I use) is Link2SD. This app will require root access. Follow the steps below to know how to use the app;
Step 2: Grant permission when asked.
Step 3: Select the app you want to move. Do not select system apps as trying to move them could break your system.
Step 4: After you have selected the apps you want to move, simply tap on MOVE TO SD CARD.
It’ll take some time to finish moving all the apps depending on the number of apps you are trying to move. After it’s done, you will see MOVE TO PHONE in the place of MOVE TO SD CARD. You can tap on it to revert the process.
Settings external storage as the default storage
If your internal storage is getting low, you can make our external storage the default storage for your phone. All the apps and downloads will be stored in external storage instead of internal. Follow the steps;
Step 1: Go to Settings.
Step 2: Open Storage.
The option for selecting file types could be unavailable on the older version of Android. All the files and apps will be stored in the external storage on early versions. These are the manual and automatic ways of moving apps between internal and external storage.
