T-Mobile’s LG G3 gets the Lollipop firmware update

LG G3 owners have been waiting for a long time to get the Lollipop update in their devices. The last year’s LG’s flagship phone arrived in the market with KitKat out of box, along with the promise to get future updates. The Korean smartphone giant had not mentioned the timeline, and we should not be surprised that the company is taking a long time to update even its flagship. Now, finally, the update has started. T-Mobile last week started testing the Lollipop update for the device, and now those operating with this carrier can update their devices.

The Lollipop update for T-Mobile’s LG G3 is however, not like the normal OTA one. It’s is little different, the users can update their devices through LG’s support tool (T-Mobile’s software update page still reads that there is no update available for the G3). This will push the current version of the LG G3 to 5.0.1 Lollipop (software version D85120b and build version LRX21Y), which is not much exciting anyway, since two new minor versions have already been released by Google to the Nexus, Motorola, Android One and some other devices. However, this is at least a good (if not great) news for the device owners, since they are getting the update anyways.

To download the update manually, you’ll first need to visit LG’s mobile support tool website, then click the link that reads Software Update (LG Mobile Support Tool). In order to install it, you’ll need a PC running Windows 2000 or later. Once you download the new software, the tool may tell you that your software is already up to date. If so, select the options button, then choose upgrade recovery.

Android Lollipop brings Material Design with fluid animations, 3D views, and multi-colored themes to LG G3. A brand new ART runtime is also implemented. Now that it’s available through LG’s update tool, though, it shouldn’t be too much longer before the OTA is here too. We’ll update about that as soon as the OTA will be out, and so, stay tuned.
