Following last year’s exploding debacle, Samsung is back with its most impressive device yet – the Samsung Galaxy Note8. It is still the most capable, most desirable and the biggest phone that Samsung makes.
Galaxy Note8: Hardware
The Note8 borrows heavily from the design of the Galaxy S8 plus, but sports a slightly bigger display of 6.3 inches, less curvy corners and a generally squared-off frame. The aluminum and glass build with minimum bezels continues the trend of tall screen with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. The tall screen provides more screen real estate which has always been one of the major goals of the Note Series.
The Quad HD Super AMOLED screen dominates the front of the phone with a higher screen to body ratio than other flagships in the market. The back houses dual cameras, a first for Samsung; and a fingerprint sensor still located at an odd position like its S8 counterparts. The device has a Bixby button, dedicated for Samsung’s digital assistant and of course, the S Pen – with a thinner tip and more levels of pressure sensitivity. Color options are black, gray, gold and blue.

Galaxy Note8: Camera
The Note 8 has a pair of 12MP cameras: a primary and a telephoto lens. We have seen this setup in other smartphones too but what makes the Galaxy Note8 stand out is the Optical Image Stabilization in both of its cameras. So it is capable of adding artificial DSLR-like background blurring – with a ‘Live Focus’ mode that enables you to adjust the blur intensity in real time.
Galaxy Note8: Software
The Galaxy Note8 ships with Android 7.1.1 Nougat and the Oreo update is expected soon. Bixby is integrated into the device just like Google Assistant. The software experience is identical to that of its S Series counterparts. New features include pairing two apps in so that you can launch them together in Split Screen Mode from Apps Edge.
Galaxy Note8: S Pen
The S Pen hardware on the Note 8 is the same as the Note 7, which is to say it has 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and gets that down to the screen with a 0.7 mm stylus point.
S Pen tricks: When you pull out the S pen, the screen off memo mode is activated where you can take up to 100 pages of notes. You can handwrite a message or picture with the S Pen, send it to someone in a message, and it’ll play back animated just as you drew it.
Apart from battery size, camera and S Pen, the Note 8 is nearly identical to the S8+. But it marks the comeback of Samsung from one of the largest consumer electronics PR disasters in recent memory – following the Note 7’s explosive episode and the subsequent global recall. The Note 8 is here and is about to face off against a redesigned iPhone, the Pixel 2 XL, and other upcoming flagships. Let’s see if it makes a successful return from one of its most humbling failures.
