OnePlus One will continue to have Cyanogen support in India

At the moment OnePlus launched its One smartphone in India a few days ago, Cyanogen Inc. (the company behind CyanogenMod ROM which operates in the OnePlus One) had announced that the phone will not get any support or update for CyanogenMod in the country. This was due to the deal of OnePlus with Micromax Ltd., which had given Micromax exclusive right to use the Cyanogen OS. The deal said that Cyanogen will only support the devices which are manufactured by Micromax under the Yu brand, and use the CyanogenMod as OS. Yesterday, Cyanogen has made a U-turn in its announcement, and clarified that OnePlus One will continue to have Cyanogen support in India.

The previous deal between Micromax and Cyanogen had even led OnePlus to take a decision to make their own ROM, based on the Android 5.0 Lollipop, as there is the necessity to provide the update to the users. The Indian users were disappointed (and even felt deceived by both the companies) by that news, but now they are no more unhappy with Cyanogen, Micromax and OnePlus. Everthing is crystal clear now, OnePlus One will continue to have CyanogenMod as OS, and it will keep on getting the OTA updates based on the latest versions of Android as soon as Cyanogen releases them. Since the current problem for OnePlus is solved, we are yet to see if it changes its decision to develop the ROM.

The Indian potential buyers of OnePlus One, who were afraid to buy the device due to the information about it not getting further updates, may now change their decision too, and go forward to buy the phone. The phone currently runs in CM 11S, based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. The invite is however, required there too, which will be the India-specific invites, as the Global invite won’t work to ship the phone in India.
