Samsung has recently announced the release of two new smartphones or phablets in its line of mid range products. The device is called Samsung Mega which is available in two variants- one with 6.3 inch 1280 x 720, 720p and another with 5.8 inch qHD display(960 x 540), both have Android 4.2 jellybean OS. The 6.3″ Mega also comes with LTE network and higher processor. This means Samsung now has the smartphone with the biggest display. Earlier, Huawei Ascend Mate boasted of having ” the world’s largest display” as it unveiled its humungous 6.1 inch display at the CES 2013. However, it should be noted that Samsung Mega is not a high end phone as it comes with a dual core processor whereas to pass as high end you need at least a quad-core processor under the hood. Also, the Mega’s come with HD TFT (not IPS) screen as opposed to high Super AMOLED Plus with higher ppi in most high end Samsung devices today. Other spec such as design, RAM and display size is awesome for general use such as videos, internet surfing and reading.
The standard preferred display size among most smartphone users is 4.3″ and 4.7″ with only handful of enthusiasts grabbing anything with displays higher that that. As for these Samsung Megas, we have yet to see how they do in the market and its success depends on how it is priced. If these devices are priced anywhere closer to other high end devices like the Galaxy Nexus 4 or Galaxy SIII, I will pass. Furthermore, Asian mobile giants like Huawei, Xiaomi and ZTE are highly competitive in their prices and offer high end specs at mid ranged prices. The Samsung Megas will soon hit the market but its prices are yet to be announced. Lets just hope the price is right for the budget users who cannot afford Galaxy Note 2 but love its giant display and design.
