Latest IDC press release: In 4Q12, Android still on top in Japan

According to IDC’s Japan Quarterly Mobile Device Tracker of total mobile phone shipments in Japan in 4Q, 77.9% were smart phones which is 22.2% increase compared to last year. In terms of operating system, Android is still on top with 57.8% share beating OS for the second straight quarter. The total smartphone shipment for the full year 2012 was 28.5 million units. Japan also saw increase in tablet market with 88.3% rise in tablet shipment over the year.

In the tablet segment as well, Android held the top spot with 48.3% share beating iOS for the second consecutive quarter. Furthermore, Japan expects its smartphone demand to stay strong and grow to 30 million units in 2013. Due to the increased availability of cheaper tablets like Nexus 7, Amazon Kindle Fire and ipad mini and increased demand for tablets among business users, Japan expects growth in the tablet segment as well in 2013.
