Re-start your device

This is the first method that everyone should try before performing any of the main methods. Many of the time just by re-starting your device can solve the issue. To re-start your device:

  • Unlock the screen of the devices.
  • Press and hold the “Power” button until a menu appears.
  • Select “Power off“.
  • Wait for the device to power off.
  • Wait 10 seconds, then press and hold the “Power” button to power the device back ON.
  • After that, see whether it fixes your issue or not.

Note: Before you try the given methods, make sure you back up all the content of gallery (videos, photos and other stuff) because you may lose the content. Many of the users have not lost anything things while some of the users have lost their content.

Method 1: Clearing Cache and Data of Gallery and Camera app

  • Go to Settings >> Go to Application Setting (In some devices application setting is named as apps).
  • Go to, All the apps > >Find Gallery >> Clear Data and Cache
  • Once you have clear everything, Next you need to Force Stop the application
  • Similarly, Find Camera >> Clear Cache and Data and force stop the application.

Method 2: Clearing Cache and Data of Media Storage

  • Go to Settings >> Go to Application Setting (In some devices application setting is named as apps).
  • Go to, All the apps > >Find Media Storage >> Clear Data and Cache
  • Now, Restart your device and see if it solve the error or not.

Method 3: Reset App Preference

  • Go to Setting>> Go to Application Setting (In some devices application setting is named as Apps).
  • Go to, All the Apps > >Click on Menu Key/button [In some device you can even see three dots on the top right corner of the screen- click on it]
  • You will see different option >> Tap on “Reset app preferences”
  • A dialogue box will appear >> Read the content and Click on RESET APPS 
  • Now Restart your device and check if it fixes your error.

Alternative Methods to Fix the Error:

Method 4: Delete some items from SD Card

Many of the users have fixed “Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped” Error by deleting some of the content that was carrying lots of space. You can even delete some of the videos and photos and check whether it fixes your issue or not. I hope your error is fixed simply by deleting some of the items.

Method 5: Unmount SD Card

  • Go to Settings >> Storage >> Scroll down and select “Unmount SD card
  • Now see whether the error is fixed or not. If you still receive the error message then try removing the SD card and see if that fix your error.
  • If it fixes then the culprit is your SD card.
  • You better change your SD card or if you don’t want to change then format the SD card.

Method 6: Wipe cache partition from Recovery Mode

  • First turn off the phone >> Press volume up and power button together to go to Recovery Mode
    (It depends upon the phone that you are using to go to Recovery Mode. For some phone, pressing volume Up and Down with power button at the same time helps to go in Recovery Mode. Just find out which one works for your device to enter in Recovery Mode).
  • After that Recovery Mode will appear with many options >> use volume up and down to control the screen and power button to press ok.
  • Select wipe cache partition >> press power button and it will then start cleaning the cache.
  • A message will appear after the completion >> Select reboot system now and it will start rebooting your device.

Now your device has wiped the cache and you can use the device like previously without error. This process may erase the save data of the app.

  1. I found another way to solve this problem: go to Settings->Apps and tap the “Configure apps” gear icon. Next tap “Modify system settings”, select Gallery from the list of apps and turn on the toggle.
    This method worked for me and fixed the issue with the Gallery app on my Acatel PIXI 4.

    On Samsung devices I believe the method is slightly different: go to Settings->Apps, tap the overflow (three dots) menu and select the “Special access” option. Next tap “Apps that can change system settings”, find Gallery from the list of apps and turn on the toggle.

  2. my tab using nougat 7.1.1..my gallery , my files , chrome etc..keep closing and crashed. I find the update caused the problem. once i uninstall the update, apps working normal. can play any files from memory card.
