Ever received the ‘screen overlay detected’ message? No idea what to do or what caused it? Follow the steps below. Here’s how to fix Screen overlay detected error.
The Cause
If you are running a floating app such as Facebook Messenger’s chat bubble and then start another newly installed one, which requests access rights. Samsung and Motorola smartphones users have reported this problem but the problem is not limited to these two manufacturers.
The Fix
First you have to find which app have the permission to ‘draw’ over the screen. To do so, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Open Settings
Step 2: Tap the magnifying glass or search icon located at the top right corner.
Step 3: Type ‘draw’.
Step 4: Tap on ‘Draw over other apps’
For Samsung users, follow the following steps:
Step 1: Open Settings.
Step 2: Go to Applications > Application manager
Step 3: Tap on More > Apps that can appear on top
You will now see a list of apps that have the permission to use floating bubbles or other form of screen overlays. All you have to do now is identify the troubling app and then deny it the permission to draw on screen. Some of the types of app that may be causing this problem are:
- If you see a floating app on your screen, it is possible that that app is the culprit.
- If you have an app that can alter the colors of your display or adjust brightness, that app could be causing the problem.
- If you see no obvious culprit, disable every app on the list.
Try launching the app again, you should receive a permission request without the ‘Display overlay detected’ error. Samsung users have also reported that if you have enabled one handed keyboard setting, that could be causing the problem. Deactivate it from Settings > Advanced features > One handed operation. If you have deactivated every app on the list, consider reactivating it one by one while testing for error. Also, only activate the apps you actually use.
