Enable Picture in Picture mode in YouTube

Android 8 Oreo has a new feature – Picture in Picture mode or PiP. It is available for any app if the developers choose to support it. It is already available in the VLC player for Android. So you have to be on Android 8.0 Oreo and the app must support PiP to be able to use it. However, YouTube doesn’t seem to work in PiP even though the app supports it. There was a workaround to that but it no longer works. So what exactly is the problem? How do you enable Picture in Picture mode in YouTube?

Google made Picture in Picture mode available for YouTube, but they made it exclusive to YouTube Red subscribers. You can use any other app or media player in PiP mode if it supports it. You can even put Chrome in PiP. But, if you open YouTube in Chrome, you can’t put it in Picture in Picture mode. If you have YouTube Red subscription, you can easily switch to PiP by pressing the home button and reposition it anywhere on the screen.

So why did Google made Picture in Picture mode exclusive to YouTube Red subscription? They are obviously trying to make people sign up for Red in the worst possible way. Red is not available in every country so the feature will not be available for most of the users all around the world even if the pay $9.99 per month for the subscription.

So what do you do now? Not having PiP mode on YouTube is not the end of the world. Also, there were the apps that give you the feature of floating screen a long time ago. You may have to root your device or install a 3rd party app, but if you really want it you can have it. One such app is Floating Apps Free.
