Android Fix: RPC:S-5:AEC-0 error while updating or installing apps Google Play Store

Nowadays, a lot of people experience the RPC:S-5:AEC-0 error while trying to update or install apps from the Google Play Store.
This error will pop up right after you have almost completed the update or install. You will even see the install bar reach the very end and then the annoying error like “Update for “Gmail” could not be downloaded due to an error. (Error retrieving information from the server. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0])”. However, this is a minor error on an app like Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Dropbox, Viber etc and can be resolved by following these few steps:

Update for "Gmail" could not be downloaded due to an error. (Error retrieving information from server. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0])

Methods to solve RPC:S-5:AEC-0 error

Method 1:

  • Open system settings
  • Go to Applications (or Apps) >> All
  • From all apps select Google Play Store >> Clear Cache and Uninstall updates
  • Again, from All>>Download Manager >> Clear Cache and Data
  • Finally, All >> Google Services Framework >> Clear Cache and Data
  • Now, rerun Google play store.

Method 2:

  • Go to system settings>> Accounts>> Google>> remove your Gmail account
  • Now from settings>> Apps>> All> Force stop, Clear data and cache for Google Play Store, Google Service Framework and Download Manager (like in method 1)
  • Now again go to settings>> Accounts>> Google>> Add your Gmail account
  • Restart your android and then accept all the Google terms and setup Google settings
  • Rerun Google Play Store and update or install your app.

Clearing caches to Google Play Store and Google Services Framework worked for some and that doesn’t take time. The second method will definitely work but takes more work. I hope you’ve solved your RPC:S-5:AEC-0 error issue.

  1. Followed advice. Did not work. Wrote to google. They know the prblm but no fix yet. Quite disturbing as this prblm apperared yesterday out of the blue to my knowledge. Sorry

    • Sorry that it didn’t work for you. You are right its a well known problem but I guess there is no “one solution for all”. I will try to find some alternative fixes..

      • I found a working solution on internet
Delete cache and clear data in google services
        Remove your account
Re sign in and it is done
But don’t ask me why this one worked on my moto xxom wifi only
        Best
        J

  2. These instructions didn’t work for me, if you remove your account and re-add it it fixes things. Now to get back to my updated Google Play store.

  3. I followed the 1st set of instructions and now I do not have Google Play Store. How are u suppose to rerun google play store. I am unable to install or update anything. Both google play store and download manager are not listed anymore in apps.
    Thanks

    • Yeah I am fixed. Found that the play store app was disabled, changed that and then followed the second set of directions and now I am up and running.
      Thanks

    • Go to Application manager, go to ALL tab (swipe to the left to move over to all), go to the BOTTOM OF THE LIST, you should see Play Store, and Downloads or Download Mgr. under disabled, click them and enable them….. you CAN NOT LOOSE PLAY STORE, IT HARDWIRED INTO THE PHONE SOFTWARE……. IT’S THERE.

  4. Thanks. I tried Method 1 and also calling Google, but Method 2 (a variation of it) finally worked. The key piece was the removal of my Google Account rather than the clearing of the data/cache for the various related apps.

  5. This doesn’t work for me. I canot remove my Google Account. The only option is to start the sync. Im using an Nexus 4 with Andoid 4.2.

  6. #2 worked… Believe clearing data on Google Framework Services (attempting to prompt for the 4.3 update) caused the issue to begin with.

  7. Method 2 worked for me thank you – I tried #1 but it didn’t work.
I think the trick is to add and then re add your Google account.
Also, in the instructions you say to remove your ‘GMAIL’ account – this should read as ‘Google’ – just so people don’t get confused.

Thanks again – this saved me after I did a force OTA (which worked by the way!) to 4.3

  8. try this

This did the trick for me
    Go to settings/app.manager/all
    Delete data + cache :
    Google Play Store
    Google Play-services
    Google Services Framework
    Hangouts
    Market-feedback agent (important)
Then delete google-account(data/system/user/0/ find the accounts.db file and cut and paste it somewhere else)
Restart the phone and then re-add google-account( paste your accounts.db file earlier to it’s original location).
p/s~Your device need to be rooted to remove/delete google account without a factory reset.

  9. Had to use the second method to get Google Play Store to work again on both my Nexus 7 and Nexus 4.
I screwed both up trying to force the early download of the new 4.3 OTA. Has taught me to be more patient.
    Am so grateful.
    Many Thanks,
    Mike

  10. After trying out many different solutions that i found online, including both of these, i was unsuccessful. What ended up fixing mine was to just do a factory reset. After i did this the problem was resolved. So if these steps are unsuccessful then a factory reset will fix you problem.

  11. Method 2 worked fine. I had almost given up after the unhelpful non-advice from Google. You have made my day.

    Many thanks.

  12. I would like to say I followed a fix for the package invalid problem on this site. It didn’t work and ended up creating this server problem. I did all methods in this article and it created more problems. Many apps won’t open now. Do not listen to this person!! I followed each instruction exactly too.

  13. Had this error with my brand new Huawei Ascend G525 out of the box. Method 1 didn’t work for me, but method 2 worked like a charm. THANKS SOOOOOO MUCH!!! <3<3<3

  14. Method 2 worked for me using a BRAND new Nexus 4 with Android 4.3. Silly that Google would ship something like this that didn’t work correctly out of the box. I was not able to download ANY apps from Play. Hope this takes care of whatever was wrong.

  15. No one at the phone company that I am with could help me with this, so I searched for help myself instead (sometimes you can only rely on yourself!) and this advise did the trick, thank you so much!!

  16. Well that worked. Don’t know why it cropped up, we have been changing channels on the router of late though.. I have 4.1.1 nothing major changed. was just installing fall live wallpapers and error 500 showed up. went to check movies and the above showed up. This fixed both errors.

  17. Nothi is working Whenever i open up the google play stote it says ‘ server error ‘ ‘try again,’ Everything ive tried doesnt work at all . :'(

  18. Both the Methods didn’t work. I have a one more problem of sync. it says the sync is currently experiencing problems and will be shortly back. tried out lot of methods in different forums but didn’t help any. Need help
