Android in February 2015: Lollipop on a raise

Google has published the Android distribution report for the month of February 2015, and it shows some changes if compared to the last month. The distribution of Android in February 2015 shows that Lollipop grows double, and KitKat is on the raise as well. Rest of the older versions are on the phase of fading.

In the 1-month period, Lollipop grows its share to 3.3%,up from 1.6% last month. Though the increase is significant, this is not so surprising for a new version, since a number of high-volume Android devices received an update to the new build over the past month, and new hardware with the OS has also hit the market.

If all the three minor versions of he Jelly Bean are combined, they boot on 42.6% of all devices. This is down from 44.5% a month ago, but still, they claim to have the highest share of Android. Android 4.4 KitKat also grew its distribution share to 40.9%. A month ago, 39.7% of all devices ran KitKat. The KitKat now seems to be so close to Jelly Bean, and we could probably see them running on almost equal deices by next month.

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Android 2.3 Gingerbread are still struggling, but they have declined by half a percentage point each to 5.9% and 6.9% respectively. Android 2.2 Froyo hasn’t moved from its 0.4% distribution share. Its not really the good thing to know that the version as old as Ice Cream Sandwich is still on the hold, let alone the even older versions: Gingerbread and Froyo.

By next month, we hope to see the Lollipop on prominent position, while KitKat might increase a little bit. The older versions might decrease further, and we guess we’ll see the Froyo on the list for another couple of months or so, unless the amount of Android devices running newer versions sell further and then finally outnumber the devices running on Froyo to less than 0.1%.
