Xiaomi has released another budget smartphone- the Xiaomi Redmi 2, which is the sequel of the Xiaomi Redmi 1s. Also known as Xiaomi Hongmi 2, the smartphone comes with sharp mid-range specifications and very nice price tag.
The Xiaomi Redmi 2 does not stand so high in case of the other specs though. It features a 4.7-inch HD (720 x 1280 pixels) IPS LCD capacitive display, which has a pixel density of 312 ppi. The handset is obviously sleek, as it has smaller bezels than the previous version, and is more compact too. It weighs just 133 grams, and has a thickness of 9.4 mm, both of which are better than the Redmi 1s. The phone will have 8 GB of internal memory, and will have the expandable storage option via microSD card upto 32 GB. It will have 1 GB RAM, and for the processing power, there will be a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 CPU chipset compiled with a quad Cortex-A53 1.2GHzCPU, and Adreno 306 GPU for gaming and graphics. For the photography and videography options, this smartphone will have a 8 MP primary camera with autofocus and LED Flash which can capture videos upto 1080p @ 30 fps, and a 2 MP secondary camera for video calls and selfies. The juice will be provided by a Non-removable Li-Po 2200 mAh battery. For the connectivity options, there will be LTE support, microUSB v2.0, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS + GLONASS + Beidou positioning, WiFi and NFC (LTE model). The phone will run on Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system with Xiaomi’s MIUI 6 over it, and we can’t say anything about the future updates. The phone will be available in five color options- White, Black, Yellow, Green and Pink.
Key specs of Xiaomi Redmi 2:
- 4.7-inch 720 x 1280 display
- 64-bit 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 CPU
- 8 GB internal storage (microSD support)
- 1 GB RAM
- 8 MP rear camera with 2 MP front-facing shooter
- 2,200mAh battery
Xiaomi has also enabled color temperature adjustment in this phone. The phone will support two SIMs, and both the slots will support 4G LTE connectivity- which is amazing feature to have in a smartphone under this category. The best part of this phone is its price- the Xiaomi Redmi 2 has a price tag of 699 Yuan (US$112), which is a killer deal seeing its specs. With that price, it becomes even cheaper than its predecessor- which was available for around $125. The phone is all set to launch in China on January 9th (coming Friday), and nothing is yet said about its international availability. We can however, wait for the device, because Xiaomi is trying very hard to go global, and it has released most of its best previous devices worldwide (the countries such as India, Indonesia, and Malaysia are the main).
Xiaomi has become the third largest smartphone manufacturer in year 2014, and it will not stop here. More flagships are to come from this Chinese giant in later months this year, we will keep updating.
