Samsung returns with its flagship phone S8 and S8 Plus for this year continuing its galaxy S series. Bringing a familiar but a further refined body that is even edgier than ever. Samsung no longer uses the word edge for its new flagship phone as both the models come with edge. Which also indicate that Samsung S series will come in curved display from now onward. The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus is the best looking smartphone Samsung has ever made. There are lots of small and big improvement in S8 and S8 plus compared to the previous versions.
The phone is mostly made of glass and metal. The front and the back of the phone is made of Gorilla Glass 5. The placement of the key and ports are somehow similar to Galaxy S7 but there are some changes made which we can count as the improvement. You will find Power Button on the right side and Volume rocker and an additional button (just below the volume rocker which trigger Bixby) on the left side. Micro USB charging port (USB Type-C) , Headphone Jack (3.5mm), Speaker Grilles, Microphone on the bottom and Simcard Tray on the top of the phone.
The design of Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus is stunning. You will find the edge is more curve than ever which moves down trying to meet the curve of the back. Now there is the fingerprint reader on the back and while it does not feel too bad on the S8 but the S8 Plus makes it feel little bit awkward because you have to reach for it. Another big change comes in the removal of the hardware key. Yes, this is actually happening guys. The hardware Home button is now gone by the side way and the Samsung logo has also been removed from at the top.
Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 5.7 inch display while S8 Plus has 6.2 inch display that comes with Super AMOLED Screen. Both the phone feels good to handle in one hand. Few things had to change in order to make this happen mainly a resolution which shift to 2960 X 1440 for an aspect ratio of 18.5 by 9 (18.5:9) and the galaxy S8 Plus manages to get a little bit taller rather than wider in order to accommodate this change.
Talking about the processor, well Samsung has used Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 and also Exynos 8895 Octa. So you will get any one of these two chipset depending on the region you live. It comes with latest Adreno 540 GPU with 4 GB of RAM. It has got Micro SD card slot inside the SIM Tray which supports up to 256 GB (gigabyte). The internal storage of the phone is 64 GB.
It is IP68 certified that means now it is dust proof and water-resistant over 1.5 meter and 30 minutes. The version of Android is 7.0 that is Nougat. The change toward more display means soft keys which mean a navbar (navigation bar) and customization. The display still respond on wet and when its port detects too much moisture you’ll get a warning message on the screen so you can dry the port before connecting to power supply to charge the phone.
The camera of S8 and S8 Plus is better than before and both the version holds the same camera. While many manufacturers have gone for dual camera setups, Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus still have only one camera at back. The rear camera is 12 MP (megapixels) which looks pretty much unchanged with its large dual pixel senor and f 1.7 aperture. The front facing camera has increased to 8 MP (megapixels) with some improvement over last version. The selfie lovers will love the camera as it takes awesome selfie. It also includes some new features like stickers and stamps which is similar to snapchat.
One of the things you will love about the camera is that, it doesn’t have a bump like s7 or even iPhone 7. The camera have got better post processing so the picture should have an enhancement but it is more on the software side than just on the shooter specs. Other improvement comes by, built-in intelligence. Bixby vision lets you point at a subject and it brings up important information about that place. It can scan bar code, translate text and does many others thing which is pretty much awesome.
Bixby is a whole new way of interacting with your phone with just your voice. It is a little bit like Samsung’s version of Google now and voice search. It can be triggered with another hardware change, a new button underneath the volume rocker. There are many good things about Bixby and its function like changing the brightness or taking a selfie. Also a new layer to the camera is available now as well as Bixby can use the camera to scan not only words so you can translate among dozens of different languages.
We can also find product information of pretty much any item. Samsung is also opening Bixby up to third-party services and apps. Although there is Bixby available in S8 and S8 plus we get built-in Google assistance. There are many other features which we can know after using the Bixby.
Security has always been a top priority in Samsung flagship phone. You will find fingerprint sensor (just beside the camera) at the back side of the phone due to the removal of Home button. It has also iris scanner for the security purpose which we have already seen in Note 7. Samsung also introduced a new facial recognition unlock feature but it is not as secure as the iris scanner.
There is now a setting that activates the scanner as soon as you raise the phone and if you hold it right in front of your face, it will unlock instantly. Iris scanner can be better alternative to fingerprint because you don’t have to worry about placing the finger right on the scanner as the fingerprint sensor position has moved to back of the phone which may be unusual for Samsung users. Also like on Note 7 there is now secure folder which lets you store your files and apps. You can access the folder with a pin, pattern or using iris scanner.
Everybody has eye on the battery of Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus because of the fire catching problem in Note 7. S8 comes with 3000 mAh Non-removable battery while S8 Plus comes with 3500 mAh Non-removable battery. Compared to the S7 and S7 edge, the S8 and S8 Plus has the similar battery capacities and the same quick charging feature. It also supports wireless charging. Samsung says battery life should improve by up to 20% even with its bigger display which is possible due to its power management improvement on its new processor.
6.2 inches (~84.0% screen-to-body ratio) : S8 Plus
