This guide is only for Lollipop. Do not follow this rooting guide if your device has been updated to Marshmallow. Also, following this guide to root your Note 5 will void the warranty. If you decide to unroot once you root your device, you may have Deep Sleep bug but this bug seems to be fixed after SuperSU 2.67. Visit this XDA Thread before to learn more. Note that I do not take any credits for this method. The credits go to the respective developer who did all the hard work finding this exploit.
There are currently two methods to root Note 5 – Systemless root and Flashing Pre-rooted kernel.
Method 1a: Systemless root by flashing SuperSU.zip
Step 1: Unlock bootloader.
Step 2: Download TWRP for your device from here. Select the .tar version.
Step 3: Reboot your device into Download mode. To do so, switch off your device and turn it on again by holding Volume Down, Home and Power at the same time.
Step 4: Download and Open Odin.
Step 5: Connect your device to the computer. Wait till the color of COM PORT changes color.
Step 5: Click on AP button and select the custom recovery file.
Step 6: Click on the Start button.
Step 7: Let the device settle for a few minutes after it finishes booting.
Step 8: Now download the Systemless SuperSU .zip, put it in your SD card and simply flash it via TWRP recovery.
Step 1: Download CF Auto Root file from here. Search for your device’s model number.
Step 2: Unlock bootloader.
Step 3: Reboot your device into Download mode. To do so, switch off your device and then switch it on again by holding Volume Down , Home and Power buttons together.
Step 4: Download and open Odin on computer.
Step 5: Click on AP button and select the CF Auto Root .tar file.
Step 6: Connect your device to the computer. Wait till the color of COM PORT changes color.
Step 7: Click on the Start button.
You can flash any any pre rooted kernel with Odin or with a custom recovery to obtain root. Here’s how. Download any pre rooted kernel in .tar.md5 file format. You can find available kernels on this XDA Thread. This kernels support SM-N920C, SM-N920CD, SM-N920G, SM-N920I, SM-N9200, SM-N9208_SEA.
Step 0: If you have a systemless root installed, remove it before you continue. To do so, open the SuperSU app > Select Full unroot.
Step 0 a: Uninstall any CPU control apps and/or any modifications or tweaks and/or init.d scripts.
Step 1: Reboot your device into Download mode. To do so switch off your device and switch it on again by holding Volume Down, Home and Power buttons together.
Step 2: Download Odin and open it. Connect you device to your computer. Wait till the color of COM PORT changes color.
Step 3: Click on AP button and select the downloaded .tar.md5 kernel file.
Step 4: Click on the Start button.
Step 5: Your device will reboot. Initial reboot may take some time. Don’t panic. after the device reboots, you will see SuperSU app on your app drawer.
