Nowadays, we can see the smartphone or their processor manufacturers flaunting about 64-bit processors all the time. Almost every mid-to-high range Android devices being released nowadays have the 64-bit processor. Things have changed since the release of Android 5.0 Lollipop, as we may have seen that it was not the case before that, all we could see was devices with 32-bit processors. The largest chipset maker, Snapdragon is building a lot of 64-bit chipsets, and they are all the counterparts of its previous 32-bit ones. The rest of the famous chipset makers- Mediatek, Samsung (for Exynos), Huawei (HiSilicon Kirin) and several others are following the same trend.

With respect to all the medias’ and manufacturers’ attention that the 64-bit processors for Android are getting, are they really important? Why is 64-bit processor important in Android? Here we are going to discuss about the topic in thorough.

64-bit processor is the one which can deal up to 64 digits, hence given the number. The latest Snapdragon 810 processor is 64-bit, same are Snapdragon 615 and 410 or Exynos Octa. The trend was started by Apple, which launched world’s first smartphone running in a 64-bit proessor- the iPhone 5s. The trend grew to Android too, which was so obvious and unstoppable.

Why is 64-bit processor important in Android?

Here are three short and sweet reasons for the question “Why is 64-bit processor important in Android?”:

1. They can handle more memory:

The 32-bit processors could handle relatively less amount of memory. The highest RAM that we saw in smartphones running on a 32-bit processor had 3 GB RAM (the processor’s highest limit for RAM is reported to be 4 GB actually), such as LG G3, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Huawei Ascend Mate 7 and some others. Similarly, the highest memory we saw was up to 320 GB- that was in Saygus V2. Both were not released much long before though- they were first shown at CES 2015. According to the engineers, the 64-bit processor can handle much higher memory than these. So, we won’t be much surprised if the Android smartphones come with much higher RAM or memory than at present.

2. They will be faster and more secure:

Android 5.0 Lollipop has the new ART Runtime- which is optimized for the 64-bit processors. KitKat version also has ART, but it also has Dalvic runtime as option, from which users can choose (this may be the reason why both the 32-bit and 64-bit devices are being released on KitKat). The main point is, Android will be faster on 64-bit processor, and the apps will also load and operate more fluid. This applies in case of security too: in some cases algorithms that work just fine on 64-bit platforms are too slow to be used on 32-bit. If we’re going to end up using our phones as mobile wallets, we want the security algorithms to be the strongest ones possible – and for that, we need 64-bit.

3. 64-bit phones will last longer:

With the rate of Android smartphones being released on 64-bit processor nowadays, we an assume that the 32-bit processor phones are going to be obsolete very soon. No devices on 32-bit processor will release soon enough, and they won’t be able to load stuffs, on run fluently on newer version of Android. Hence, the 64-bit processors will be much necessary. With the increase in the memory required and all due to the high-resolution videos, high-graphics games and all, the phones on 32-bit processors won’t be able to handle them any more, and that situation will come soon enough. This can be another reason, the phones which will have 64-bit processors will have more memory, thus giving the storage options for large files, heavy games and all.

This was the list of three most basic reasons for the need to have a 64-bit processor Android smartphone. What do you think are other major reasons? You can leave your opinion on the comment section below.
